Taken as a whole, the available scientific and alternative evidence suggests that multiple sclerosis patients suffer from chronic inflammation caused by diets that contain inadequate antioxidants, omega-3 deficiencies, excess sugar, and foods that fail to significantly reduce oxidative stress. In addition, gluten, cow's milk, or some other allergen further promotes autoimmune disease. The coupe de grâe, however, is a thyroid hormone deficiency that causes an abnormal need for dopamine. Dopamine is very susceptible to oxidative stress and can break down to form toxins such as dopachrome and other chrome indoles. These, in turn, kill oligodendrocytes, the cells needed to repair the damage to myelin caused by chronic inflammation.Beyond this, a shortage of triiodothyronine in multiple sclerosis patients appears to reduce their ability to produce new oligodendrocytes. Therefore, myelin deteriorates and the symptoms of multiple sclerosis worsen. Wilcoxon and Redei have shown that such associated thyroid malfunctions in adults may be triggered by environmental challenges early in life. This process is termed fetal programming.
If the three step hypothesis presented in this book is correct, then it is possible to prevent and reverse multiple sclerosis. However, to achieve such goals requires societal and individual commitment. This volume concludes with an outline of the strategies that are needed. These include promoting anti-inflammatory diets and methods for avoiding the allergens that trigger inflammatory cascades and associated chronic auotimmune disease. Also discussed are orthomolecular techniques for mitigating the negative impacts of the neurotoxins associated with the oxidation of excess dopamine and for stimulating the body to produce higher levels of antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase. In summary, this book provides new evidence on the causes of multiple sclerosis and offers approaches for reversing its impacts.

Reflecting state-of-the-art and current practice in chronic pain management for physical therapists, this innovative text stands out as the first published work to focus on this aspect of the field. The book makes a clear distinction between acute and chronic pain, describing in depth the differences in approach to chronic pain patients, including chronic pain syndrome patients. Cases illustrating the many syndromes of chronic pain---including headache, neck and back pain, and neuropathic pain states---are presented, and the importance of accurate documentation is stressed throughout. The book is multidisciplinary in scope, taking all aspects of treatment into consideration in patient assessment and goal setting. The anatomy and physiology of pain, pharmacology, anesthesia, and the behavioral approach to management are included among the topics covered. Prevention of disability, the significant role of the physical therapist in this, and the variety of different pain treatment facilities available are discussed in depth. Written with the goal of improving the outcomes of chronic pain patients who rely on physical therapy, this book will prove invaluable to all health professionals involved with these patients.

Children are not mini-adults. They are growing and maturing at their own individual rates and their physiological responses to exercise are dependent on a large number of variables as they progress through childhood and adolescence into adult life. Understanding has been limited by the fact that measurement techniques and equipment developed for use with adults are often not appropriate or even ethical for use with young people. These issues are addressed in this book which provides an analysis of physiological responses to exercise in relation to age, growth, maturation and sex.
•Structured in an easy, accessible way for students and lecturers
•Well referenced, including a further reading list with each chapter
•Numerous standard textbook elements, including learning objectives, key points and an extensive glossary of terms and commonly used abbreviations
•The editor and contributors are all active researchers in paediatric exercise physiology with experience of teaching modules in this area

"I knew about drunk, but did not know anything about living sober. I hadn't really been sober for fifteen years. It wasn't enough that I stopped drinking. I had to learn how to live."
The journey from alcoholic insanity to sobriety -- and the pivotal role of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in navigating that transition -- is the focus of Last Call. Using powerful first-person narratives like the one above (composites of many anonymous speakers), psychotherapist Jack H. Hedblom provides compelling insights into the minds and hearts of addicted drinkers, from bizarre behavior and denial to the moment of "hitting bottom" and seeking change.
Hedblom covers the process of getting sober, from diagnosis to detox to sobriety. He focuses on the challenge of learning to live without drinking -- a long-term goal, Hedblom asserts, that is best achieved by regular participation in AA.
Hedblom's vivid descriptions reveal AA meetings as gatherings of fellowship, compassion, tears, and laughter. In relating the history of the organization, he describes the role of sponsors, elaborates on the Twelve Steps and the Promises, emphasizes the importance of spiritual development in recovery, and refutes the common misconceptions that equate spirituality with organized religion.
Through the stories of people who have escaped the tyranny of alcoholism with the help of AA, Hedblom shows that the road to recovery is a journey of self-discovery, change, and hope.

Many of the other systems of the human body are probably somewhat familiar to you. The skeletal system includes the bones of the body and serves as a support system for the rest of the body systems. The muscular system allows the body to move, and the digestive system allows us to take in food and convert it to forms needed to build and maintain the body. It is relatively easy to understand the functions and the importance of these systems, but what about the immune system? The immune system is extremely important to us. It is the most important system in the body for avoiding and fighting infections. It also prevents the development of certain types of cancer. To help you understand the importance of this system, we will consider two examples of conditions where the immune system does not function properly. When we understand how problems with the immune system result in these conditions, we will have a better appreciation of why an effective immune system is so important to our health and well-being.
